As we approach the one-year anniversary of the passing of Bishop David O’Connell, we invite you to join us in remembering his life and legacy at a memorial mass.

Join all LA Catholics on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 10am at San Gabriel Mission. We invite you to stay after Mass, for a blessing of the memorial exhibit.

You are all cordially invited to visit the chapel to honor the life, ministry and legacy of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell, who died February 18, 2023, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, in downtown Los Angeles, 555 W. Temple Street, Los Angeles, 90012.

The chapel features an exhibit of photos of Bishop O’Connell’s family and ministry, an assortment of his liturgical vestments such as his chasuble, miter and pectoral cross, as well as personal items such as handwritten notes, his Bible and rosary, books of jokes he consulted and a wooden plaque from his office with his episcopal motto “Jesus, I trust in you,” which he embodied.

About Bishop David G. O’Connell

Bishop David G. O’Connell, D.D., V.G.

Bishop since 2015.

The Most Reverend David G. O’Connell was the Episcopal Vicar of the San Gabriel Pastoral Region, one of the five Pastoral Regions in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He was appointed Titular Bishop of Cell Ausaille and Auxiliary Bishop in 2015.

Bishop O’Connell received a BA in Philosophy and English Literature from the University College Dublin in 1975, a Bachelor of Divinity from Maynooth College in 1977 and a Masters of Spirituality from Mount St. Mary’s College in 1987.

Since his ordination to the priesthood, he served as Associate Pastor at St. Raymond in Downey, St. Maria Goretti in Long Beach, and St. Hillary in Pico Rivera, and then as Pastor of St. Frances X. Cabrini, Ascension Catholic Church, St. Eugene and St. Michael Parishes. Archbishop Gomez appointed him Episcopal Vicar for the San Gabriel Pastoral Region in 2015.
