The Office of Legal Counsel includes the general counsel, consulting lawyers, canonical investigators, paralegals and administrative support staff. The Office serves and represents the Archbishop and the archdiocese for all archdiocesan locations and ministries, including parishes, schools, cemeteries, mortuaries, the archdiocesan central offices and all other archdiocesan operating units in both external and internal matters. The Office responds to inquiries and concerns from archdiocesan locations, negotiates, reviews and approves transactional documents and contracts, conducts and oversees necessary legal investigations and activities, coordinates the Archdiocesan Administrative Handbook and other references, and provides training on pertinent legal and risk-related issues. It assists with significant business program support, trusts and estates management, and special project development. The Office also oversees and coordinates legal representation by outside counsel and participates in both state and national diocesan lawyers’ activities. The general counsel is in a leadership role for the archdiocesan C3 technology project.
