Remember that contemplating beauty draws us closer to God. // Recuerda que contemplar la belleza nos acerca a Dios.
I hope in the Lord, I trust in his word; with him there is kindness and plenteous redemption.

As Catholics we believe that God is Good, True, and Beautiful.
In his 1999 Letter to Artists, Pope Saint John Paul II wrote:
“In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art. Art must make perceptible, and as far as possible attractive, the world of the spirit, of the invisible, of God. It must therefore translate into meaningful terms that which is in itself ineffable. Art has a unique capacity to take one or other facet of the message and translate it into colors, shapes and sounds which nourish the intuition of those who look or listen.”
While studying the faith (things that are true) and practicing virtue (doing the good) help us to know and love God better, so does taking in things or experiences which are beautiful. Contemplating beauty—whether a work of art, a piece of music, or the sunrise or sunset—is a very real way to draw closer to God who is Creator and Redeemer.
During these days of social-distancing and self-quarantine, find time to immerse yourself in beauty. Open an art book, listen to some sacred music or seek beauty in some of the online resources below.

En su Carta a los Artistas de 1999, el Papa San Juan Pablo II escribió:
“Para transmitir el mensaje que Cristo le ha confiado, la Iglesia tiene necesidad del arte. En efecto, debe hacer perceptible, más aún, fascinante en lo posible, el mundo del espíritu, de lo invisible, de Dios. Debe por tanto acuñar en fórmulas significativas lo que en sí mismo es inefable. Ahora bien, el arte posee esa capacidad peculiar de reflejar uno u otro aspecto del mensaje, traduciéndolo en colores, formas o sonidos que ayudan a la intuición de quien contempla o escucha.”
Mientras que estudiar la fe (cosas que son verdaderas) y practicar las virtudes (haciendo el bien) nos ayuda a conocer y amar mejor a Dios, también lo hace participar en cosas o experiencias que son hermosas. Contemplar la belleza, ya sea en una obra de arte, en una pieza de música o el amanecer o atardecer, es una manera muy real demacercarse a Dios, que es Creador y Redentor.
