The school is owned by its Board of Directors and operated in sponsorship with the Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Western American Province of Our Lady of Angels. Job Summary
The Substitute Teacher serves as a temporary classroom instructor to ensure continuity of learning during the absence of a regular teacher. Assignments are limited to no more than 30 consecutive instructional days per classroom and are scheduled on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year.
Reporting to the Dean of Faculty, the Substitute Teacher implements lesson plans provided by the teacher of record, maintains a safe and disciplined learning environment, and upholds the mission and values of St. Francis High School in the Capuchin Franciscan tradition. This position plays a vital role in supporting student learning, spiritual development, and the school’s faith-based educational philosophy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement lesson plans provided by the regular teacher to maintain instructional continuity.
- Manage classroom behavior effectively and respectfully to ensure a safe learning environment.
- Record and submit attendance accurately and promptly following school policy.
- Communicate student progress or behavioral concerns to the teacher of record and the Dean of Faculty.
- Maintain the structure, discipline, and moral standards consistent with Franciscan values.
- Promote the mission of St. Francis High School by modeling faith, respect, and service.
- Provide student supervision (homeroom, lunch, and events) as assigned.
- Utilize technology and digital learning platforms (Google Workspace for Education, Blackbaud, Go Guardian) to support instruction.
- Uphold confidentiality and professional standards in all interactions.
Requirements
Requirements / Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required; California Teaching Credential preferred.
- Demonstrated classroom experience or ability to manage students effectively.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and digital teaching tools.
- Successful completion of background check and VIRTUS training (required).
- Experience in Catholic or faith-based education preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Regularly stand or sit for extended periods and move between classrooms. Frequently walk on stairs or ramps and lift up to 20 pounds. May work in noisy environments. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
