What is Onward 2 High School’s Summer Institute?
The Smet Foundation’s Onward 2 High School will be hosting a Summer Institute at Sacred Heart High School and St. Pius X – St. Matthias Academy. This enriching academic program will be offered to young men and women who will be entering the seventh and eighth grade in the Fall of 2026. The program’s curriculum is designed to build up essential concepts, inspire a growth mindset, and prepare students for academic excellence in science and math.

Position: Summer Institute Teacher
The Summer Institute Teacher is responsible for instructing a class of around 25 students entering the 7th or 8th grade. SI will provide teachers with a developed curriculum of math and science lessons and STEAM activities centered around themed days. SI teachers will also aid students in the development of inquiry based learning projects that close the program. Teachers will be required chaperones for the program’s field trips. Teachers will be expected to foster relationships with students in the classroom and during community activities.
Responsibilities
- Work up to 29 hours per week for 3 weeks during the program dates of Mon. July 7 – Fri. July 25, 2025
- 15 Instructional Days from 8:00 am -1:30 pm*
- Deliver engaging high-quality classes and activities utilizing a curriculum provided by O2HS
- Complete tasks including, but not limited to, monitoring technology and taking attendance
- Chaperone Field Trip to the Getty Museum and the California Science Center * [Extra Hour on Extended, approximately 2:30 End Time]
- Motivate students and advise their creation of an inquiry based learning project
- Attend a mandatory, compensated SI staff orientation prior to the start of the program
- July 2, 2025
- Meet with other teachers, administrators, O2HS Program Director for weekly morning meetings/updates
- Assist with morning drop off, after school pick up, rotating break supervision schedule, and overall safety and supervision of students
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Current teacher working in middle or high school with a math/science background
- Comfortable modifying and executing lesson plans when given a curriculum
- Ability to build rapport and leverage relationships with students to keep them engaged
- Ability to administer Brain Breaks throughout the program
- Willingness to collaborate and work with a team of educators
- Adherence to and respect of Catholic education
- Cleared fingerprinting, Virtus Training, TB Test
Preferred Qualifications
- Possess a Multiple Subject, Single Subject Teaching Credential, or currently working toward credential

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
