Saint Monica Preparatory (SMPREP) is a coeducational, TK–12 parish school and a ministry of the St. Monica Catholic Community in Santa Monica, California. With a legacy spanning over 90 years, we are committed to forming students for lives of faith, purpose, and citizenship.
Position Summary:
SMPREP seeks a part-time long-term substitute English teacher to cover two sections of 10th Grade English, one college-prep and one honors, from September 29, 2025, to January 30, 2026.
Classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, and alternate Fridays during the following schedule:
Office Hours:
8:00 – 8:20 AM (optional student support). Friday is a 9:00 am late start for students, allowing teachers to attend PD sessions on campus.
Period 2 (College Prep English 10): 8:30 – 9:55 AM
Period 4 (Honors English 10): 10:05 – 11:25 AM
*Alternating Friday class times are:
Period 2 (College Prep English 10): 9:00 – 10:10 AM
Period 4 (Honors English 10): 10:25 – 11:35 AM
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach one section of College Prep English 10 and one section of Honors English 10.
- Plan and deliver engaging, rigorous 80-minute lessons aligned with course goals.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to guide student growth.
- Foster a classroom culture that values critical thinking, inclusion, and academic challenge.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure continuity and alignment across the English curriculum.
- Support the whole student—academically, socially, and emotionally—in line with SMPREP’s values.
Requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
- MA in English and a California Single-Subject Teaching Credential.
- 3–5 years of high school teaching experience.
- Experience with project-based learning, differentiated instruction, and backward design.
- Proficient in instructional technology and blended learning environments.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in English.
- Ability to teach both college prep and honors-level coursework.
- Strong communication, classroom management, and relationship-building skills.
- Genuine enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring students.
- Willingness to engage in school life beyond the classroom.
Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
