POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Cathedral Director of Liturgy and Music, the Director of the English Choir is a part-time, non-exempt position. The position holder oversees and directs the Cathedral’s English choir, supporting the mission of the Cathedral and consistent with the tenets of the Roman Catholic Church. Working with the Director of Liturgy and Music, the Director of the English Choir supports the development of authentic liturgical music based on knowledge of sacred music from Gregorian chant to contemporary compositions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directs the English Choir at the Sunday 10:00am Mass and at special liturgies throughout the year.
- Coordinates with the Director of Liturgy and Music the musical selections for each week, selecting music of high quality and multiple genres, that is accessible and promotes congregational participation.
- Directs the English Choir in one weekly rehearsal, with additional rehearsals as needed for special liturgies.
- Educates the choir in the role of music in the liturgy, as well as in music fundamentals – developing a choir capable of singing all styles of liturgical music.
- Schedules and supervises stipend section leaders.
- In coordination with the Director of Liturgy and Music, engages supplementary musicians as needed for special liturgies.
- Works with the Director of Liturgy and Music to encourage collaborative relationships between Cathedral choirs.
- In conjunction with the Cathedral Volunteer Coordinator, recruits new members for the choir.
- Working with the Cathedral Volunteer Coordinator, ensures that all choir volunteers are certified in safe environment protocols and that all Archdiocesan safe environment protocols are followed.
- Works with Director of Liturgy and Music to encourage collaborative relationships between the Cathedral choirs.
- Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Bachelor degree in music or the equivalent music education.
- Minimum two years of experience in Roman Catholic Church setting.
- Ability to read both choral and instrumental music and to use and teach a variety of vocal techniques to choir members.
- Ability to accompany on piano or organ highly desired.
- Understanding and working knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgies and liturgical celebrations
- Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate choir members.
- Commitment to working as part of a team.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
