Music Teacher Job Description
St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, a DK-8 school in Los Angeles, CA, is looking for a music educator to teach music class for the 6th – 8th grade students during the 2025-2026 school year. Job duties include teaching music theory, a variety of musical forms, and appreciation for music from diverse cultures. The ideal candidate is a dynamic, collaborative, and creative teacher who demonstrates an enthusiasm for working with middle school-aged students, a commitment to innovative pedagogy, and familiarity with solfège. The teacher will prepare students for school liturgies, the annual Christmas Pageant in December, as well as a performance/concert in late Spring.
Summary of Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Establishes and maintains school-wide standards of student behavior to ensure an orderly, productive classroom environment
2. Maintains professional competence through participation in service education activities provided by the school and/or self-selected professional growth activities
3. Works with learning specialists and homeroom teachers to address the needs of individual students for whom learning accommodations are made
4. Regularly communicates with parents regarding the progress of individual students who may need accommodations or additional support
5. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day
6. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school, and with specified educational partners
7. Utilizes a wide array of formative and summative assessments
8. Meeting the deadlines and submission of all materials not limited to course syllabus, lesson plans, progress reports, and final grades
9. Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees
10. Performs other duties as assigned
Candidates for employment should be familiar and comfortable with the Catholic teachings and mission statement that drives our school.
Job Type: Part-time (this is a 0.6 FTE position and is not eligible for benefits)
Direct Supervisor: Vice-Principal
Compensation: $32,400 – $51,000 based on salary scale placement
Requirements
Education and Training:
- Music education degree from a fully accredited university or college, or music degree from a fully accredited college with additional experience in music education
Experience/Skills Preferred:
1. Ability to provide accurate appropriate vocal model for young singers
2. Ability to accompany singers on one or more instruments including piano or guitar
3. Ability to teach literacy in music notation, to coach performance of vocal and instrumental music, and to nurture creativity through composing and improvising at the developmental level appropriate for each grade level
4. Ability to articulate the educational philosophy, goal, and approach of the music program to the wider community of administration, faculty, parents, and students.
Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
