Examen

“Let us search and examine our ways, that we may return to the LORD”

-Lamentations 3:40

Reflection from Mike Aquilina

Centuries before Christ, Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” And it’s still true today. We need a daily “reality check” — a moment when we try to see our life as God sees it. In Christian tradition we call this the daily examen. It’s a review of the day’s events, measuring each thought, word, and deed against the moral law and the demands of the Christian vocation. Some people like to do this at night, before going to bed. Others like to do it at midday, so they still have time to correct their course. The prophet Jeremiah exhorted Israel: “Let us search and examine our ways, that we may return to the LORD” (Lamentations 3:40). We need only two minutes or so to review the day — to recognize the good and tell God we’re sorry for the bad. Then we resolve to do better the next day. There is no better summary of the spirit of Lent — no better practice for moving forward in the spiritual life.

Originated in 1522 by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Examen invites us to encounter God at work in our lives, offer gratitude for our many blessings and promise to do better tomorrow.

Do this every day and you will find that you know God better and know yourself better. You begin to see yourself as God sees you, with all the tenderness that he has for you, and the beautiful things that he wants for you.
