The Catholic Bible Institute: Bible Talks Series will have a talk ‘Scripture, Catholic Social Teaching, and the Christian Life’ presented by Dr. Anathea Portier-Young, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Duke University on May 23, 2026 from 7pm-8:30pm (PT) via Zoom.
Synopsis:
Jesus identified two great commandments that summarized the whole of God’s teaching: To love the Lord God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Centuries before him, the prophet Micah declared, “You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.” The principles of neighbour love and justice are at the heart of the rich tradition of Catholic Social Teaching. After surveying the history of this tradition, we will focus on the Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching articulated by the USCCB. They are Life and Dignity of the Human Person; Call to Family, Community, and Participation; Rights and Responsibilities; Option for the Poor and Vulnerable; the Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers; Solidarity; and Care for God’s Creation. We will consider scriptural sources and resources for each of these principles, and discuss how those scriptural texts might be applied to the Christian life today.
