The Catholic Bible Institute: Bible Talks Series will have a talk ‘Hastening the Kingdom’ presented by Dr. Chris Seeman, Professor of Theology at Walsh University on January 24, 2026 from 7pm-8:30pm (PT) via Zoom.
Synopsis:
As Catholics, we look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. But what does it mean to “look forward” to these events? Two inadequate answers typically characterize our catechesis. Either we mythologize the kingdom of God as an unimaginable future for which human beings can only passively wait – and so we ignore it favor of individualistic questions like “How can I get to heaven?” Or we reduce it to a human project, “building the kingdom of God on earth.” Neither of these views is found in Sacred Scripture. Saint Peter was the first Christian to grapple with the problem that the kingdom of God has not yet come. In the second letter attributed to him in the New Testament, he proclaims that, while human beings cannot “make” the kingdom come, we can hasten its arrival by living lives of holiness and devotion. “Looking forward” means much more than waiting and wishful thinking. Peter asserts that there is a direct, active relationship between what we do today – everyday – and when “the day of God” comes. This has profound implications for how we understand the Christian life.
