Christian Scripture – New Testament Advanced Ministry Studies

This course provides the historical context of the New Testament. Intro to Gospel, the synoptic Problem, and the relationship of John with the Synoptics. Key events in the life of Christ. The early Church in Acts of the Apostles, major themes of the Pauline literature and overview of theological and pastoral themes in the Catholic letters.

This course will take place Saturday, December 14th from 9am-4pm (Breaks and Lunch time included) via Zoom.

Course Learning Objectives: 

  •  To be able to articulate the core content and interrelationship of the Gospels: their message, themes, and the mysteries of Christ’s life.
  •  To be able to articulate the core content and select themes of Acts, the Pauline corpus, and other New Testament texts.
  •  To be able to apply both ancient and modern exegetical methods to the study of Scripture.
  •  To grasp the scriptural basis behind key Catholic doctrines, worship practices, and morality.
  •  To be able to appraise and respond to critiques of the Gospels as levied by skeptics and believers struggling with their faith.
  • To discover and learn how to help others discover not only the meaning of biblical texts within their original context, but also their application in the lives of believers today.

Presenters: Dr. Matthew Ramage, Ph.D.

Dr. Matthew Ramage is Professor of Theology at Benedictine College where he is co-director of its Center for Integral Ecology. He is also Adjunct Professor and Concentration Chair of Sacred Scripture for the Holy Apostles College and Seminary graduate program. In addition to his other scholarly and outreach endeavors, he is author, contributing author, or translator of over fifteen books, including Dark Passages of the Bible: Engaging Scripture with Benedict XVI and Thomas Aquinas (CUA Press, 2013), Jesus, Interpreted: Benedict XVI, Bart Ehrman, and the Historical Truth of the Gospels (CUA Press, 2017), The Experiment of Faith: Pope Benedict XVI on Living the Theological Virtues in a Secular Age (CUA Press, 2020), and Christ’s Church and World Religions (Sophia Institute Press, 2020).  His latest book, From the Dust of the Earth: Benedict XVI, the Bible, and the Theory of Evolution, was published by CUA Press in 2022.
