Catholic Social Teaching: Sharing the Best Kept Secret of the Catholic Church Advanced Ministry Studies

Too many Catholics have never heard the good news of the Catholic Social Teaching of the Church. Our ability to share this “best kept secret” has the potential to transform our relationship with God and the world. Join us as we explore the history and development of the Church’s Catholic Social Teaching, its methodology, and its implications for a life of missionary discipleship lived out through spirituality and compassionate action.

This course will take place Saturday, June 7th  from 9am-4pm (Breaks and Lunch time included) via Zoom.

GOAL: The participant will articulate key principles of Catholic Social Teaching and will illustrate how to apply them to our lives in a global society. 

GATHERING/LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of the class, the catechist will be able to

  • Understand the foundational principles of human dignity and the common good (part II)
  • Identify current social issues that relate to each of the seven major themes of Catholic social teaching (part II)
  • Understand the significance of the principle of solidarity for social justice and especially for developing nations and peoples (part II)
  • Discern their personal calling to advance the sharing of Catholic Social Teaching in order to foster a spirituality of “ecological conversion” (Part IV)

Presenter: Maria G. Arroyo

Maria G. Arroyo is currently the Acting Director for the Transborder Coalition for Border Ministries, addressing existing and emerging migrant needs. Previously, Maria worked for Catholic Relief Services for over 15 years educating and mobilizing for global solidarity. Maria has also collaborated with diocesan formation institutes throughout Southern California for over 25 years, presenting and teaching on justice and spirituality themes. She is a certified spiritual director and facilitates days of reflection/retreats virtually and in-person. Maria holds a Masters in Theology from Loyola Marymount University and a Masters from the University of San Diego in Pastoral Counseling.  Her current interest lies in the spirituality and science of our emotions and heart-mind connection. She will be a certified trainer soon and hopes to offer training to all seeking greater ease from stress and consolation of spirit.
