December 6-7 || Red flags in gift giving

’Tis the season for giving and receiving gifts, but some gifts are inappropriate for children to receive from adults. Talk to your children about appropriate gift giving – who they should give presents to and who they do not need to give to. Discuss when they should accept a present or not. This would be a good time to establish family rules about gift receiving. For example: friends and family may not accept gifts outside of established holidays, like a birthday or Christmas. Es época de hacer y recibir regalos, pero algunos regalos pueden ser inapropiados para que los niños los reciban de adultos. Hable con sus hijos sobre la forma adecuada de hacer regalos y a quién deben hacer regalos y a quién no. Hablen de cuándo deben aceptar un regalo o no. December 13-14 || Watch out for fire dangers 

Christmas is a popular time to decorate with candles and electric lights, both inside and out of the house. These decorations can be beautiful and festive but also come with the risk of fires. Parents should make sure to keep candles out of reach of children, and off surfaces where they could be easily knocked over. All lights should be checked for faulty wires or other defective parts that could cause a fire. La Navidad es una época popular para decorar con velas y luces eléctricas, tanto adentro como afuera de la casa. Estas decoraciones pueden ser muy bonitas y festivas, pero también conllevan el riesgo de incendios. Los padres de familia deben asegurarse de mantener las velas fuera del alcance de los niños y fuera de las superficies donde puedan darse vuelta fácilmente. December 20-21 || Check Christmas presents for button batteries and other hazards

Many parents will be spending the next few days assembling (and reassembling) their children’s gifts, and it’s important to be on the lookout for potential hazards, including button batteries and small parts. A couple of safety tips include following age guidance and other safety information on toy packaging; getting safety gear, including helmets, for scooters and other riding toys; and keeping small balls and toys with small parts away from children younger than age 3. December 27-28 || Start the New Year reflecting on the protection of children and vulnerable persons

As we start the New Year and commemorate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, we remember that Mary’s life was devoted to the good care and protection of her Son and to lead all to God the Father. This season also reminds us, as parents and safe adults, of the beauty, dignity, and vulnerability of the children we are called to safeguard. Prayer is also a major part remembering victims, survivors, thrivers and all who are involved in the work of protecting God’s children. We pray to our Mother of Good Counsel asking her to protect all children and vulnerable persons. Comience el nuevo año reflexionando sobre la protección de los niños y las personas vulnerables

Al comenzar el nuevo año, conmemoramos la solemnidad de María, la Santa Madre de Dios, y recordamos que la vida de María estuvo dedicada al buen cuidado y protección de su Hijo y a guiar a todos hacia Dios Padre. Esta temporada también nos recuerda, como padres y adultos responsables, la belleza, la dignidad y la vulnerabilidad de los niños a los que estamos llamados a proteger. La oración también es una parte importante para recordar a las víctimas, los supervivientes y todos los que participan en la labor de proteger a los hijos de Dios. Rezamos a nuestra Madre del Buen Consejo pidiéndole que proteja a todos los niños y personas vulnerables.
