Archbishop Gomez on Immigration Reform

We Need a Way Forward

As a pastor, my heart aches for our people and for our country.

As LA Catholics, we believe our faith calls us to reflect deeply on the dignity of every person — and to examine the issues of our day, such as immigration, challenges to the defense of life, and attacks on the human family, in light of our Catholic faith. Archbishop Gomez has been a steadfast voice in this conversation, offering pastoral insight rooted in Catholic social teaching and compassion for all of our brothers and sisters.

Through prayerful reflection and faithful engagement, we invite you to explore Archbishop Gomez’s writings and join us in offering a Catholic voice for a just and humane approach to immigration — one that upholds the dignity of every person, protects the most vulnerable, and respects our nation’s responsibility to enforce its immigration laws in a fair and orderly way.

After Minneapolis, we need a way forward

The country cannot go on like this. The first task is to restore order and peace to our streets, and insist on calm and restraint in our public discourse. In the wake of last weekend’s tragedy, I hope all sides in this conflict — federal authorities, city and state officials, and those protesting the enforcement actions — will take a step back in the interests of the common good.

“We still need to fix the broken system that allowed them to cross our borders in the first place. Not enough people in Washington seem to be serious about that.” Read more from Archbishop’s February 11, 2025 column.

May Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of Jesus and Mother of all the peoples of the Americas, keep us close to her Son in this moment. And may she help us to work together as neighbors, in a spirit of unity, to truly become one nation under God.
