About
the parish
In 1927 Bishop Cantwell sent to Nativity Church, Father J. J. Torres to the parish to serve those parishioners who spoke only Spanish. Property was to be purchased to build a little church for the Mexican-American community, but father Torres was moved before this could be accomplished.
Masses were then offered for a while under a large tree on Medina Court until an old dance hall was purchased in 1928 to serve as a mission church. Thus the Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe began. Father Lopez at the mission was succeeded in 1932 for Father Arias and in January 1934 by Father Fernandez, and June 1934 by Father Ochoa.
In September of 1966, Catholic priests helped break ground for Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Medina Court of El Monte. Included in the ceremonies were present Fathers John Coffield, Alfredo Galindo (Bishop Tijuana), Michael Hunt and Juan Arzube.
Guadalupe Mission became founded as a church in 1973. “Father Juan” who for many years was assistant pastor at Nativity, caring for the faithful at Our Lady of Guadalupe, was appointed Titular Bishop of Civitate and Auxiliary of Los Angeles in February of 1971. Bishop Arzube was consecrated on March 25, 1971.
