Sacred Heart Novena

As we reflect with gratitude on the blessings God has bestowed on our country, our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus demands that we consider how we might foster truth, justice, and charity in American life.”

— Archbishop Alexander K. Sample

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops voted to consecrate the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in June 2026. This pious custom celebrates and marks America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Through this consecration, the USCCB is inviting all Catholics to lead their lives by faith and see the face of Christ reflected in each sister and brother. Read more about the consecration from the USCCB here.

Other ways your parish communities can participate in this sacred and historic moment:

  • Ring Bells for Prayer – Parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are invited to join in solidarity with the bishops gathered in Orlando by tolling their church bells at 3:00 PM Pacific Time, the Hour of Divine Mercy. As the sound of the bells carries across our neighborhoods, may it serve as an invitation for all people to pause, turn their hearts to God, and unite in prayer. Together, let us entrust our nation, our communities, and all those in need to the mercy and love of Jesus Christ.

  • Join Us for the Feast of the Sacred Heart – On Friday, June 12, the faithful of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are invited to gather for the 12:10 PM Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels as we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This special Mass offers an opportunity to unite our prayers with Catholics across the country as we entrust our families, communities, and nation to the loving Heart of Christ.

On the Human and Divine Love of the Heart of Jesus Christ by Pope Francis

The symbol of the heart has often been used to express the love of Jesus Christ. Some have questioned whether this symbol is still meaningful today. Yet living as we do in an age of superficiality, rushing frenetically from one thing to another without really knowing why, and ending up as insatiable consumers and slaves to the mechanisms of a market unconcerned about the deeper meaning of our lives, all of us need to rediscover the importance of the heart.
