Praying for Pope Leo

“I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.”

— Pope Leo XIV

October 11, 2026

On October 11, Pope Leo announced during his Angelus address that his doctors found a “small, localized nodule” in his lung. Detected at the early stage, Pope Leo’s doctors advised him to undergo surgery to remove it. On October 13, Pope Leo arrived at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he underwent surgery in the afternoon. EWTN is releasing live updates.

1:00 PT: The Holy See has announced the nodule was cancerous: “The intraoperative frozen-section examination confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma [a type of non-small cell lung cancer], as suspected from preoperative tests.”

11am PT: Update from Vatican News: “The surgery was completed successfully, within the expected timeframe and as planned, and the Holy Father has returned to his room.”
