Journey Through Lent
On Saturday, February 20, 2021, the Office of Life, Justice and Peace hosted a zoom online retreat to begin our Journey Through Lent. This Zoom Online Retreat consisted of three reflections, each followed by quiet time for personal meditation and a closing prayer service. Our retreat directors, Fr. Chris Cartwright, S.J. and Chaplain Frederico Gianelli, S.J. guided us with components of Ignatian Spirituality to discern the following:
- Where we are spiritually
- What are we carrying
- What gives us life
- What gives us peace
- What are we called to do during this 2021 Lenten Journey

Retreat Director: Fr. Chris Cartwright, S.J.
Associate Director, Cardinal Manning House of Prayer for Priests
Fr. Chris Cartwright, S.J. is the Associate Director of the Cardinal Manning House of Prayer for Priests in Los Angeles. The House of Prayer serves priests as a place for spiritual direction, retreats, rest and peace, as well as a center for personal reflection, days of recollection, and priest support groups. He has been at the House of Prayer since 2012.
A native of Long Beach, CA, Fr. Chris entered the Jesuits in 1970 and was ordained a priest in 1980. Assignments have included: pastor in Sacramento (St. Ignatius Loyola Parish) and Honolulu (Holy Spirit Parish); Campus Ministry Director at USF, SCU, Univ. of Hawaii and Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. He regularly assists with Sunday Masses at St. Ignatius Parish in Los Angeles, St. Mark’s Parish in Venice and other parishes when called.
Fr. Chris is Superior of the Jesuit Community at Loyola High School. He is responsible for the Jesuits there as well as those at working at Verbum Dei High School and several Jesuits at work in parishes and centers in Los Angeles.
Retreat Director: Chaplain Frederico Gianelli, S.J.
Mission Advancement Team, Verbu, Dei High School
Frederico Gianelli, S.J., is a Jesuit Scholastic currently assigned to the Mission Advancement team at Verbum Dei High School, located in Watts, Los Angeles.
Frederico has an Advanced Certification in Hospice Palliative Care Chaplaincy, being professionally certified by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. He also holds an equivalent of Master of Divinity degree from the University of Theology of the Uruguay Mons. Mariano Soler.
He did his Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training at St. Camillus Catholic Center for Urban Interfaith Pastoral Care as a Palliative Care Chaplain at the Los Angeles County General Hospital/USC Medical Center.
He was the inpatient/outpatient Cancer Care Chaplain at Stanford Medical School Center, with a major concentration at the bone marrow transplant unit. His work included providing in-service trainings and lectures on palliative care to medical students, physician residents/interns, chaplain residents/Interns and social workers. He also created curricula and training for a one-year fellowship in palliative care. This training was for professional chaplains and CPE students.
Since 2004, Frederico has collaborated with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Dioceses of San Bernardino, Sacramento and Orange, giving workshops on different theological topics for adult leaders, permanent deacons programs, and parishioners.
