Lent: Day 22

Remember to pray for our priests // Recuerda orar por nuestros sacerdotes

Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life.

John 6:63

Last week, Pope Francis’ personal secretary wrote a beautiful little letter on what it means to be a priest in this time of the coronavirus.

He wrote: “Priests should be on the front lines. The faithful should find courage and comfort from seeing their shepherds. They should know that they can run in any moment and find refuge in their churches and … find comfort, to ask for the sacrament of Confession or Holy Communion or to ask for it for their loved ones.”

To be a priest is a thrilling and noble vocation. Jesus calls his priests to be on the front lines in service of the salvation of souls. The priest is a teacher, a healer, and a sanctifier. Every day at the altar, the priest stands between heaven and earth, and in his hands, Jesus comes to be the bread of life to feed his people.

Especially now, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, when things seem so fragile and the future looks frightening, we need more men to answer the call to serve on God’s front lines.

Let’s pray today for all of our courageous priests and let’s ask God to send us many more men with hearts to serve as shepherds to the faithful.
