Lent: Day 19

When we think of Christian missionaries, we often call to mind men and women who go off to live in foreign lands, tending to the spiritual and material needs of the poor or those who have not heard the Gospel. To be sure, those men and women are missionaries in a very real sense. But so are we.

Pope Francis has reminded us that everyone is called to be an evangelizer. “Every Christian is a missionary to the extent that he or she has encountered the love of God in Christ Jesus: we no longer say that we are “disciples” and “missionaries”, but rather that we are always “missionary disciples,” he wrote in Evangelii Gaudium.

Your mission territory is right where you are. Who in your family, neighborhood, or workplace needs to hear the Good News of the Gospel? Reach out to someone in your life this week who needs to be reminded that they are loved.

Cuando pensamos en misioneros cristianos, a menudo pensamos en hombres y mujeres que se van a vivir a tierras extranjeras, atendiendo a las necesidades espirituales y materiales de los pobres o de aquellos que no han escuchado el Evangelio. Sin duda, esos hombres y mujeres son misioneros en un sentido muy real. Pero nosotros también lo somos.

El Papa Francisco nos ha recordado que todos están llamados a ser evangelizadores. “Todo cristiano es misionero en la medida en que ha encontrado el amor de Dios en Jesucristo: ya no decimos que somos “discípulos” y “misioneros”, sino que siempre somos “discípulos misioneros”, escribió en Evangelii Gaudium.
