Lent: Day 18

We read in the Book of Genesis that God entrusts us with the stewardship of the earth: “Then God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth” (Gen. 1:26).

In his encyclical Laudato Si, Pope Francis called our attention to the current ecological crisis and stirred our consciences to examine where it is that we exercise domination rather than dominion over creation.

This Lent, consider doing an examination of conscience focused on your responsibility to care for creation. In what ways does your style of living work in accord with the natural world? In what ways does it place a burden on the earth’s resources or on the poor? Think about some concrete changes you can make and implement them today.

Leemos en el Libro del Génesis que Dios nos confía la administración de la tierra: “Dijo Dios: «Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen y semejanza. Que tenga autoridad sobre los peces del mar y sobre las aves del cielo, sobre los animales del campo, las fieras salvajes y los reptiles que se arrastran por el suelo.»” (Génesis 1,26).

En su encíclica Laudato Si, el Papa Francisco llamó nuestra atención a la actual crisis ecológica y agitó nuestras conciencias para examinar dónde es que ejercemos la dominación en lugar del dominio sobre la creación.

Esta Cuaresma, considera hacer un examen de conciencia centrado en tu responsabilidad de cuidar la creación. ¿De qué manera tu estilo de vida funciona de acuerdo con el mundo natural? ¿De qué manera pone una carga sobre los recursos de la tierra o en los pobres? Piensa en algunos cambios concretos que puedes hacer e implementar hoy.
