Position Summary
The High School Visual Arts Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, rigorous instruction in visual arts to students in grades 9–12. The teacher fosters creative expression, technical skill development, and critical thinking while promoting an appreciation for diverse artistic traditions and contemporary practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver effective visual arts instruction aligned with curriculum standards
- Teach courses such as introductory art, drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, or advanced/AP Studio Art
- Develop lesson plans that emphasize artistic technique, creativity, and conceptual development
- Assess student learning through critiques, portfolios, projects, and exhibitions
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and communicate progress with families
- Create a classroom and studio environment that supports diverse learners and encourages creative risk-taking
- Integrate art history, cultural context, and contemporary artistic practices into instruction
- Maintain accurate grading, attendance, and academic records
- Collaborate with the Visual Arts Department Chair and colleagues on curriculum development
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events
- Uphold school policies and expectations for student behavior and academic integrity

Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, Fine Arts, Art Education, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
- Demonstrated proficiency in multiple visual art media
- Minimum of 3-5 years of Previous high school teaching experience preferred
- Strong classroom and studio management skills
- Ability to engage and motivate adolescent learners
Preferred Skills and Attributes
- Experience teaching AP Studio Art or portfolio-based courses
- Familiarity with contemporary art practices and digital media
- Commitment to culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices
- Willingness to contribute to exhibitions, art shows, or extracurricular arts programs
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout classroom and studio spaces for extended periods
- Ability to lift, carry, and set up art materials and equipment
- Ability to use standard classroom and studio technology
Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
