ABOUT NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL

Notre Dame High School, a Catholic, college preparatory school sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross, educates the hearts and minds of students who are diverse in ethnicity, talent, and culture. OVERVIEW OF POSITION

This one-school year (August- June) long-term sub position reports to the Theology Department Chair and the administrative team of Principal and Vice Principals. The position requires teaching five theology classes, covering topics such as Philosophy and Social Justice. Faculty members are also expected to be available for school-wide tutoring periods 2-3 times per week during the school day schedule and to engage in responsibilities beyond the school day, including grading, lesson planning, department meetings, and school-wide events.

Guided by our Holy Cross mission, we believe teaching is not just a job but a vocation. We expect our educators to support students beyond academics, fostering their spiritual and personal growth. Teachers are encouraged to attend events such as Masses, retreats, athletic games, theater productions, and other school activities to build community and support students.

Evening and weekend commitments may include Open House events, admissions activities, curriculum nights, and department-specific workshops. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with admissions interviews and fulfilling other departmental duties as needed.

The school calendar runs from approximately the beginning of August to mid-June each year. Contracted hours are 7:45 A.M. – 3:15 P.M. on Tuesday through Friday and 7:45 A.M. – 4:15 P.M. on Mondays. This position is needed for the first semester, from August through December, with the potential to extend beyond the initial semester.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrate passion and expertise in Catholic theology and faith formation.
  • Teach Philosophy and Social Justice while making lessons relevant and engaging.
  • Adapt instruction to meet the needs of students from diverse faith backgrounds.
  • Participate in school-wide and departmental faculty meetings, and professional growth opportunities held after the school day.
  • Engage in the life of the school community through presence at school Masses, assemblies, rallies, class retreats, sporting events, visual and performing arts events, etc.
  • Chaperone and supervisory responsibilities during school day and some evening and weekend events.
  • Meet with students and parents as needed, during X period, before and after school.
  • Deliver instruction both on campus and occasionally via remote learning.
  • Utilize technology and innovative teaching methods to enhance student learning.
  • Support students in their faith development and ethical decision-making.

Requirements

  • Practicing Catholic committed to Church teachings.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Religious Studies or related field required; Masters degree preferred.
  • Credential or Religious Studies Certification from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles preferred.
  • Experience integrating service-learning, social justice initiatives, or campus ministry into coursework.
  • Ability to develop and implement an effective, faith-based, and engaging curriculum.
  • Ability to relate to high school students and build positive relationships while maintaining healthy boundaries.
  • Willingness to collaborate, problem solve and share best practices with colleagues.
  • High-level of familiarity and competence across cultures and multiple perspectives.
  • Familiarity with and competence in technology skills (especially Canvas platform and Zoom conferencing).
  • Well-versed in multiple areas of a science-based college-preparatory curriculum.
  • Proficient in the use of technology in the classroom and willing to incorporate it as a strategy to engage learners.
  • Must have excellent classroom management, communication, and organization skills.
  • Experience with teaching science at a Catholic secondary school is preferred.
  • Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices and technology integration in the classroom.

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
