Junipero Serra will be transitioning to the President-Principal leadership model beginning July 2022 or sooner. This is an exciting opportunity for a bold leader to shape this leadership structure, assist with the transition to this model, and make a lasting impact.

Founded in 1950 and located in Gardena, California, Junipero Serra High School is a co-educational, four-year, Catholic college preparatory school in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Current enrollment is just over 375 students. The school serves Gardena and surrounding communities, including Carson, Compton, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lennox, South Central Los Angeles, and Torrance.

The entirety of Serra’s programming originates from the school’s mission statement that stipulates students of all faiths and backgrounds deserve an academically challenging, spiritually enriching, Catholic, college preparatory education that shapes them into mature, generous, responsible citizens and leaders. The Class of 2020 enjoyed a 100% college acceptance rate. With its celebrated history, Serra now has over 4,000 graduates who are compassionate and forward-thinking individuals equipped to excel and make meaningful contributions in their communities.

Reporting to the Department of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the President is the Chief Executive Officer of the school, and as such, holds full responsibility for implementation of the school’s mission and all aspects of the school’s business and advancement operations. The President is directly responsible for the external affairs of the school, for ensuring sufficient resources, sound fiscal management, and financial stability of the school through oversight of the business operations, development, alumni, community relations, and enrollment management activities. The President works with the Consultative Board to promote the good reputation and values of the school to the external community.

The candidates we seek will have a passion for advancing the mission of Catholic education by delivering excellence throughout Serra’s spiritual, academic, and co-curricular activities. He/she will possess an understanding of the President-Principal model of administration and be comfortable partnering with committed and engaged constituents and stakeholders.

While the President must have a demonstrated capacity for broad institutional leadership, candidates could have attained this experience through various career paths, including primary, secondary, or higher education, non-profit management, or work in the corporate or public sector. Regardless of the career path, the prospective President must have expert knowledge of and a proven record of building upon a strong community culture and identifying, cultivating, and developing strategic partnerships to ensure continued accessibility, success, and sustainability. An advanced degree in educational administration or business-related field is a plus.


The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
• Knowledgeable and practicing Catholic with a thorough understanding of Catholic school philosophy
• Completed or is willing to complete catechist training
• Committed to modeling the values of Catholic educational leadership
• Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, Business Management, or related field
• Business skills necessary to manage a financial budget and develop strategic and annual plans
• Possess necessary skills to effectively market the strengths of a school, build community relationships, and drive fundraising activities
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills including proven ability to engage and inspire a wide range of stakeholders, and to build creative and mutually beneficial relationships within the philanthropic community, alumni, and corporate and non-profit sectors
• Proven fundraising and/or revenue generating success, preferably in the non-profit sector and with foundations
• Deep understanding and commitment to the student population that Junipero Serra serves
• Significant visionary leadership and management experience, with demonstrated success in addressing immediate organizational needs while driving toward longer-term goals with buy-in from all stakeholders
• Experience building, coaching, and empowering effective teams and holding team members accountable for performance
