St. Pius X – St. Matthias Academy ()






St. Pius X – St. Matthias Academy (PMA), a Los Angeles Archdiocesan, co-ed Catholic high school located in the city of Downey, is seeking a new President, commencing in July 2021. Working collaboratively with the school Principal, the President will provide enthusiastic, mission-centered leadership to ensure the school offers strong academic and co-curricular programs permeated by the Catholic faith. He/she will insure the mission of the school is preserved, offering strong long- and short-term vision that also focuses on smart fiscal and business management of a growing educational institution.
The start date for the President is July 1, 2021 (possibly sooner).

The mission of St. Pius X – St. Matthias Academy is to provide a challenging Catholic college preparatory education in a supportive learning community that will positively affect the lives of teenagers, and provide opportunities for all students to grow in faith, learn without limits, and live with a purpose.
Located in the City of Downey, the school went through a unique merger and transitioned to a coed school in 2013. In 1953 St. Pius X High School was launched as a co-ed high school serving populations in the southeast area of Los Angeles County. Ten years later, St. Matthias School was opened, serving as a Blue Ribbon school for girls, located in nearby Huntington Park, CA. While both schools thrived for many years, changes in demographics and funding led to decreased enrollment and slow growth, eventually causing the closing of St. Pius X and challenging St. Matthias to restructure in order to make financial commitments. After conducting several studies by experts at Loyola Marymount University and The Center for Catholic Education, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles decided in school year 2013-2014 to combine the two schools into one co-ed Catholic school creating St. Pius X – St. Matthias Academy (PMA), located at the former St. Pius X Downey location.
PMA has grown rapidly since the transition of St. Matthias to the co-educational St. Pius X – St. Matthias Academy. The student body has grown from 260 to more than 400 students. The facilities, located on a 17-acre campus, have been upgraded with a new library, computer lab, HVAC, a state of the art football stadium, and new baseball field. An upgraded cafeteria and new Black Box Theater will be completed in 2021. The academic caliber of the students applying has also strengthened, and the school now has a waiting list for the current 9th grade class. PMA piloted the STAR tests with the Department of Catholic Schools and it is becoming a model high school in the LA Archdiocese.

The President-Principal model of administration has been in place for three years at the school. The President was recently elevated to the role of Assistant Superintendent at the Archdiocese after serving seven years as principal and three as president. A strong consultative board has been in place for the past ten years helping to guide the school’s transition and growth. The board is passionate about achieving PMA’s mission and has been instrumental in forming a vision of PMA developing into a premier college prep Catholic high school in the area.
Serving a community of primarily a low-income, often first generation families, PMA offers transformative academic and faith-based opportunities for its students. The Principal has been vital in creating a stronger, higher level curriculum, more AP classes, and a broader array of electives. Meanwhile, the President has been instrumental in securing funding, while managing a growing sports program, improved facilities, ongoing operating and financial operations, and finding specialized academic programs for select, college-bound individuals like the Onward Scholars Program ( Together, these leaders have collaborated to develop a stronger, more cutting-edge high school.
The new President will continue to steward the institution in a manner that retains and grows the philanthropic, academic and faith-formation endeavors, while he/she continues to give access to the highest-need students in the city. To succeed in the role as President, this leader must have the ability to collaboratively develop and implement a bold vision secure the school financially and elevate and strengthen the schools brand as a desirable Catholic college prep school.

Reporting to the Department of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the President is the Chief Executive Officer of the school, and as such, holds full responsibility for implementation of the school’s mission and all aspects of the school’s business and development operations. The President is directly responsible for the external affairs of PMA, for ensuring sufficient resources, sound fiscal management and financial stability of the school through oversight of the business operations, development, alumni, community relations and enrollment management activities. Collaborating closely with the Principal who oversees the curricular and co-curricular aspects of the school, the President assures that the academic offerings are closely aligned with the vision and values of PMA. The President works with the Consultative Board to promote the good reputation and values of PMA to the external community.

Completed or is willing to complete catechist training
Committed to modeling the values of Catholic educational leadership
Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, Business Management, or related field
Significant visionary leadership and management experience, with demonstrated success in addressing immediate organizational needs while driving toward longer-term goals with buy-in from all stakeholders
Deep understanding of the student population that PMA serves (primarily economically-challenged families of diverse backgrounds)
Business skills necessary to manage a financial budget and develop strategic and annual plans
Able to effectively market the strengths of a school, build community relationships, and drive fundraising activities
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills including proven ability to engage and inspire a wide range of stakeholders, and to build creative and mutually beneficial relationships within the philanthropic community, alumni, and corporate and non-profit sectors
Proven fundraising and/or revenue generating success, preferably in the non-profit sector and with foundations
Experience building, coaching, and empowering effective teams and holding team members accountable for performance

Ability to balance decisive leadership with respectful collaboration and inclusivity
Excellent oral and written communication and motivational skills with a variety of stakeholders
Demonstrated success in providing visionary, dynamic, and entrepreneurial leadership
The ability to demonstrate performance in overseeing and directing a multifaceted operation, including fundraising, public relations, facility maintenance and enhancement, financial management and supervision of senior personnel
Intellectual, organizational, and managerial skills with an ability to lead others in long-term planning
Attitudes characterized by creativity, initiative, and optimism
Ability to effectively represent the school and the Church
