PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER & ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

POSITION INFORMATION

Summary of Duties: The Physical Education Teacher at St. Paul the Apostle School is responsible for planning and implementing physical education activities, monitoring students, and evaluating student outcomes. Physical Education classes generally emphasize sports-related skills, movement patterns, games, and fitness activities. The Physical Education Teacher records and maintains student information. He or she is responsible for communicating with all parties involved in the education of the student. In addition, the Physical Education teacher will assume additional duties related to supporting the Athletic Director in administering a highly active and carefully coordinated athletic program.

Physical Education Teacher:

  • Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Prepare and implement lesson plans, providing for appropriate learning experiences for each student.
  • Establish and enforce rules of conduct; supervise students in the gymnasium or outside on the blacktop or athletic fields.
  • Demonstrate skills being taught; assist students in performing skills.
  • Teach safety rules related to each activity.
  • May team teach with another Physical Education Teacher
  • Research, and order physical education and recess equipment.
  • Monitor and evaluate student skill levels and outcomes.
  • Maintain student records following established procedures and practices.
  • Prepare interim progress reports and trimester report cards.
  • Prepare information for participation in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • Meet and coordinate with specialists; adapt activities to students’ special needs; develop appropriate modifications for STEP plans.
  • Attend planning meetings, team meetings, faculty meetings, and other meetings as required.
  • Monitor use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Attend in-service training and job-related workshops.
  • Knowledge of emergency plans for the school, such as lockdown procedures.
  • Participate in fire/safety drills, as required.
  • May be asked to become involved in community initiatives, such as the American Heart Association or other fitness related community activities.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate field day; develop activities; set up for activities.
  • Monitor and supervise recess/lunches across all grade levels.
  • Attend faculty and administrative meetings as needed.
  • Attend student masses.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Assistant Athletic Director

  • Assist the Athletic Director in planning, coordinating and overseeing all school athletic activities including, but not limited to, team sports, summer athletic camps, and awards ceremonies.
  • Purchase and maintain inventory of all athletic equipment.
  • Assist with distribution of and securing appropriate forms and payments from athletic participants.
  • Promote policies that ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all students.
  • Coordinate with the Health Office with regard to injury prevention and management.
  • Distribute, collect, clean, repair, and store all athletic uniforms and equipment.
  • Assist with the organization of centralized sporting events on St Paul’s campus.
  • Manage the gym, scoreboard, and field for all games held at St. Paul’s, working evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Assist with communicating with both students and parents regarding appropriate expectations for each level of competition.
  • Assist with coordinating and disseminating information regarding schedules for practices, games and activities to students, parents, and faculty as needed.
  • Assist the Athletic Director with coordinating awards activities for all team sports, purchasing awards, and managing seasonal team banquets.
  • Assist the Athletic Director with maintaining records of team and individual athletic accomplishments and coordinate the display of trophies and banners.
  • Be available to step in to coach when needed.
  • Assist with scheduling of athletic contests and securing game officials.
  • Respond to time-sensitive emails.
  • Attend school events to promote St. Paul’s athletics.
  • Attend high-level regular season games and playoff games evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Assist in keeping faculty and after-school staff informed of athletic schedules to reduce conflicts.
  • At the discretion of the Athletic Director, work with St. Paul Social Media Coordinator to keep social media outlets up to date for the community and interested future families.
  • Assist in keeping the community informed about game times and locations to build community support at games.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
  • Experience coaching elementary/middle school students in a variety of sports activities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with an ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders of the school.
  • Available to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Act as a role model of professionalism in a Catholic school environment.

  • Current CA Teaching Credential (preferred)
  • CPR Certification
  • VIRTUS Certification
  • LA Archdiocese Livescan
  • TB-clear documentation

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director

Compensation Range: $54,500 – $85,000, based on scale placement

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
