St. Bernard Catholic School is seeking an enthusiastic, energetic, and faith-filled Part-Time Physical Education Teacher to provide engaging physical education instruction for students in Transitional Kindergarten through 8th Grade.
The ideal candidate will foster a lifelong appreciation for health, physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal responsibility while creating a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment. The Physical Education Teacher will implement a standards-based curriculum that promotes physical development, healthy lifestyles, motor skills, cooperation, and respect for others, while integrating Catholic values into all aspects of instruction.
The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and administration to support the school’s mission of educating the whole child—spiritually, academically, physically, and socially.
Primary Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate physical education instruction for students in TK–8.
- Develop students’ motor skills, coordination, physical fitness, and overall wellness.
- Teach a variety of individual and team sports, cooperative games, fitness activities, and movement skills.
- Promote teamwork, leadership, perseverance, sportsmanship, and respect.
- Foster healthy habits and lifelong physical activity.
- Ensure student safety through proper supervision and appropriate use of equipment.
- Establish and maintain consistent classroom and behavior expectations.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the developmental and physical abilities of all students.
- Assess student progress in accordance with school grading policies.
- Maintain accurate attendance and grading records.
- Communicate professionally with parents regarding student progress when needed.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and administration to support student success.
- Assist with school athletic events, fitness activities, and special events as assigned.
- Maintain an organized, safe, and clean physical education environment.
- Care for and maintain all physical education equipment and facilities.

- Foster an atmosphere of inclusion, kindness, and dignity for every student.
- Reinforce virtues such as perseverance, humility, self-discipline, teamwork, honesty, and respect during all activities.
- Participate in school Masses, prayer services, retreats, faculty faith formation, and school events.
- Support the spiritual formation of students through positive role modeling and Gospel-centered interactions.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Education, or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience teaching physical education or coaching youth athletics preferred.
- Knowledge of age-appropriate physical education curriculum and instructional practices.
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
- Ability to motivate and engage students of varying ages and abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Commitment to promoting student safety and positive behavior.
- Practicing Catholic preferred or a willingness to support and uphold the mission, teachings, and values of the Catholic Church.
- Fingerprinting, Safe Environment Training, and all Archdiocese of Los Angeles employment requirements must be completed before employment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, run, bend, lift, and actively participate in physical activities throughout the school day.
- Ability to lift and move physical education equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to supervise students indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
