Catholic College Preparatory in Gardena, California, is accepting applications for an Academic Counselor/Teacher for the 2025-2026 academic school year. Candidates must be committed to fostering student success in both academic and personal growth while upholding the school’s Catholic mission. This position requires teaching a minimum of two classes while also serving as an academic counselor to guide students in their educational journey.

SUMMARY OF MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Faith & Professional Expectations

  • Supportive of and comfortable working in a faith-based educational environment.
  • Maintains professional competence through school-provided and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsors student activities as needed.
  • Performs other significant duties as assigned.

Academic Counseling Responsibilities

  • Provides academic guidance to students to support their educational and career goals.
  • Assists students in course selection, ensuring alignment with graduation requirements and college/career pathways.
  • Experience with SIS such as PowerSchool
  • Monitors students’ academic progress and intervenes as necessary.
  • Collaborates with teachers, administration, and parents to develop support plans for students.
  • Guides students through the college application and financial aid process.
  • Facilitates workshops on academic planning, career exploration, and college readiness.
  • Maintains accurate student records and counseling documentation.

Instruction & Curriculum Development

  • Teaches a minimum of two high school courses, subject area based on expertise.
  • Uses a variety of assessments (formative, summative, and benchmark) to track and ensure student learning.
  • Develops and submits course syllabus, unit plans, final assessments, and final grades by set deadlines.
  • Uses an inquiry-based approach to student learning.
  • Collaborates with faculty to analyze student learning data and improve instruction within a professional learning community.
  • Participates in curriculum development and collaborates with educational partners.

Classroom Management & Student Support

  • Establishes and maintains classroom behavior standards for an orderly, productive environment.
  • Provides individual and small-group instruction to meet diverse student needs.
  • Creates and maintains a safe and engaging learning environment.
  • Identifies student needs and works with staff to address health, attitude, and learning challenges.
  • Supervises students during out-of-classroom activities as required.

Communication & Technology Integration

  • Regularly communicates with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
  • Updates Gradebook weekly and meets reporting deadlines.
  • Preferred experience with Google Suite (Google Drive, Google Classroom, etc.) and SIS platforms such as PowerSchool.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, or related field.
  • Experience in academic counseling at the high school level.
  • Strong understanding of high school graduation and college entrance requirements.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Teaching Credential and/or Masters
  • California Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential preferred.
  • Bilingual and fluent (writing and speaking) in English and Spanish

Salary Range:

  • “$47, 402 – $81,613; Compensation commensurate with level of experience, relevant professional certifications, and/or degrees earned.”

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
