About Junipero Serra High School
Junipero Serra High School is located in Gardena, California. The school is operated by the Department of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The High School was founded by James Francis Cardinal McIntyre in 1950.
The school, which was largely staffed by the Society of Mary, graduated its first class in 1953. Religious of the Sacred Heart and Carondolet Sisters and archdiocesan priests have also helped to staff the school at various times in its history. The last Marianists left the school in 1994. The school has played a very important role in the life of the community, graduating over four thousand students.
The current administration and faculty are predominately lay women and men. Their dedication to the Catholic philosophy of education and values of the Gospel serves as an example for today’s youth.
In addition to Gardena, the school also serves Carson, Compton, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lennox, South Central Los Angeles and Torrance. The student body brings with it a diverse cultural and ethnic background which continues to enrich the traditions begun in 1950.
Position Summary:
The Head Boys Volleyball Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the boys’ volleyball program, including team management, coaching, scheduling, and player development. This position requires a strong understanding of the sport, a passion for teaching and mentoring student-athletes, and the ability to foster a positive and competitive environment. The Head Coach will work closely with assistant coaches, athletic staff, and school administrators to ensure the program’s success and alignment with the mission and values of the school.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and implement effective training programs to improve individual and team skills.
Plan, organize, and conduct daily practices and team sessions.
Provide leadership and direction during games, ensuring proper strategy and team coordination.
Establish a competitive schedule for the season, coordinating logistics, transportation, and game preparation.
Monitor and evaluate player progress and development, providing feedback and guidance.
Maintain team discipline, ensuring players adhere to team rules, school policies, and the athletic code of conduct.
Manage communication with parents, school officials, and the athletic department regarding team activities, goals, and progress.
Ensure proper care and maintenance of volleyball equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
Maintain knowledge of and adherence to all league, district, and school policies, rules, and regulations.
Promote team spirit, good sportsmanship, and the values of teamwork, leadership, and respect.
Attend meetings and conferences related to the volleyball program as required.
Support the recruitment of prospective student-athletes for the program.
Qualifications:
Proven experience in coaching volleyball at the high school level or higher.
Strong knowledge of volleyball strategies, techniques, and rules.
Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, and school staff.
Strong leadership skills, with a focus on developing athletes both on and off the court.
Ability to work with a diverse group of student-athletes and foster an inclusive environment.
Previous experience in organizing and managing sports programs preferred.
CPR/First Aid certification or the ability to obtain it.
A commitment to the educational philosophy of the school and the academic success of student-athletes.
High School diploma, GED, or college degree (preferred)
Requirements
Previous coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level preferred.
Strong knowledge of the game of volleyball, including the rules, strategies, and techniques.
Ability to effectively communicate and work with the Athletic administrators, student-athletes, parents, and coaching staff.
A positive attitude and the ability to motivate and inspire athletes.
First aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends for practices and games.
Must follow all school policies and our mission statement.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
