Description

The Saint Francis High School English curriculum includes the following courses: English 9/Honors, American Literature/Honors, British Literature, World Literature, Advanced Placement English Language and Literature, Creative Writing, and Journalism.

St. Francis High School is seeking a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and mission-driven English Teacher to join our faculty beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year. Interested candidates should be able and willing to teach all levels of English, including electives.

The successful candidate will cultivate student growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking while embedding Catholic and Franciscan values into the classroom environment. This role requires differentiated instruction tailored to an all-boys school setting, collaboration with colleagues, and participation in co-curricular activities.

Faculty at St. Francis serve not only as instructors but as mentors who help guide students toward intellectual curiosity, moral integrity, and a commitment to service.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach a full course load of English classes, including but not limited to English 9/Honors, American Literature, British Literature, World Literature, and Advanced Placement courses, as assigned.
  • Develop engaging and rigorous lesson plans that integrate reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills in alignment with departmental outcomes.
  • Prepare students for examinations through structured curriculum pacing, writing instruction, and analytical practice.
  • Evaluate student work consistently and fairly using rubrics, benchmarks, and common assessments.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback that supports growth in writing, argumentation, and communication.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, grades, and attendance using the school’s learning management systems.
  • Incorporate Franciscan values such as humility, respect, service, and brotherhood into classroom culture and instruction.
  • Create an inclusive classroom environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, discussion, and active participation.
  • Offer academic support through tutoring, conferencing, and individualized instruction outside of class hours.
  • Participate actively in department meetings, curriculum collaboration, and faculty professional development.
  • Support or moderate co-curricular programs such as student publications, journalism, debate, writing clubs, or media initiatives.
  • Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and faculty colleagues to support student success.

Requirements

Requirements / Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, or a related field required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Valid California teaching credential or equivalent preferred.
  • Prior high school teaching experience required; Honors and AP English experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in Catholic or faith-based education preferred.

Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of American, British, and World Literature, including canonical and contemporary works.
  • Expertise in writing instruction including grammar, composition, rhetorical analysis, and academic research.
  • Knowledge of College Board Advanced Placement curriculum frameworks and exam preparation strategies.
  • Understanding of adolescent learning theory and strategies that engage boys in an all-male educational environment.
  • Familiarity with Catholic and Franciscan educational traditions.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move between classrooms (stairs required)
  • Sit, stand, or walk for extended periods
  • Occasionally lift or move items up to 20 lbs
  • Work in environments with moderate noise levels

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
