Description
Junipero Serra High School, a Catholic college preparatory school in Gardena, California, is accepting applications for the position of Director of Athletics for the 2025-2026 academic year. The Director of Athletics is appointed by and is responsible to the Principal and is charged with the leadership, supervision, and coordination of all school athletic programs. This role ensures that athletics align with the school’s Catholic mission, promote character formation, and provide a safe, competitive, and enriching experience for student-athletes.
The Director of Athletics serves as a member of the Administrative Council and works closely with faculty, coaches, students, parents, and external organizations to uphold the school’s standards of excellence in sportsmanship, discipline, and athletic achievement.
In addition to administrative responsibilities, this position also requires teaching 1–3 courses as assigned by the Principal, based on the candidate’s qualifications and the school’s academic needs.

SUMMARY OF MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administrative Duties
- Ensures that the school’s mission and philosophy are implemented within the athletic program, fostering moral values, social behavior, sportsmanship, and pride in accomplishment.
- Supervises, observes, and evaluates all faculty and non-faculty coaches, ensuring adherence to school and league policies.
- Serves as the school representative at league meetings and athletic events.
- Manages the hiring process for new coaches, including recruitment, interviews, and recommendations to the Principal.
- Assists the Principal in the annual revision of faculty and student handbooks regarding athletic policies and procedures.
- Establishes clear disciplinary procedures for student-athletes, ensuring due process, parent communication, and enforcement of team policies.
- Collaborates with the Athletic Administrator in developing and managing the athletic department budget, including equipment purchasing and facility improvements.
- Maintains records of student eligibility, athletic participation, injuries, and medical documentation.
Athletic Program Management
- Oversees scheduling of athletic contests, including contracts, officials, and transportation arrangements.
- Supervises the storage, issuance, collection, and inventory of athletic equipment and uniforms.
- Coordinates game management for home contests, including event supervision, security, maintenance, and administrative support.
- Ensures proper maintenance and safety of athletic facilities, including fields, gymnasiums, and locker rooms.
- Develops and maintains permanent athletic records, including win/loss records, outstanding achievements, and all-league recognitions.
- Promotes athletic programs through media, booster club activities, and community outreach.
- Collaborates with trainers and medical staff to implement safety protocols, ensure athlete health, and schedule physical examinations.
Student-Athlete Development & Community Engagement
- Works to increase student participation in athletics by promoting programs within the school and local community.
- Develops procedures for open communication with parents and student-athletes to address concerns and maintain transparency.
- Assists in the planning and execution of athletic banquets, awards ceremonies, and booster club activities.
- Organizes and supervises pre-season and summer athletic programs to enhance skill development and team preparation.
- Encourages and supports student-athletes in academic success and character formation, in alignment with the school’s values.
Summer Duties
- Develops and oversees the summer practice schedule, ensuring fair access to facilities for all sports.
- Defines curriculum content and oversees implementation for summer sports classes.
- Assists in summer sports registration and maintains necessary documentation for participants.
- Ensures proper facility usage and equipment management during summer training programs.
- Coordinates and assists in capital improvements for athletic facilities, including obtaining bids and contracts for work.

- Serves as a role model of faith, integrity, humility, and accountability.
- Participates in faculty committees, school events, and student activities.
Perform any other duties assigned by the principal.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Administration, Physical Education, Education, or a related field.
Experience in high school athletic program administration.
Strong knowledge of CIF, CAA, and Camino/Del Rey Association rules and policies.
Ability to work with diverse student-athletes and foster a culture of excellence.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
2 years of administrative experience
Master’s degree in Athletic Administration, Education, or a related field. Experience working in a Catholic school or faith-based athletic program.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Salary Range:
- “$47, 402 – $81,613; Compensation commensurate with level of experience, relevant professional certifications, and/or degrees earned.” ○ Salary Range set forth by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
