Description

Junipero Serra High School, a Catholic college preparatory school in Gardena, California, is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Principal for the 2025-2026 academic year.

The Assistant Principal is appointed by the President and Principal, with the approval of the Department of Catholic Schools, and is responsible to the Principal. This position plays a critical role in supporting the academic, administrative, and disciplinary functions of the school and acts as the Principal’s representative in their absence. The Assistant Principal works closely with faculty, staff, students, and parents to ensure a rigorous and faith-centered learning environment that aligns with the school’s mission.

In addition to administrative responsibilities, this position also requires teaching 1–3 courses as assigned by the Principal, based on the candidate’s qualifications and the school’s academic needs.

SUMMARY OF MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative Leadership

  • Acts as liaison and proxy for the Principal at school functions, faculty meetings, student and parent meetings, and events as needed.
  • Serves as a member of the Administrative Council, Admissions Committee, Curriculum Committee, Discipline Board, Evaluative Council, and WASC Steering Committee.
  • Assists the Principal in revising and maintaining the parent/student and personnel handbooks.
  • Helps develop and implement the academic calendar, coordinating key events such as back-to-school night, academic assemblies, parent-teacher conferences, and exams.
  • Directly supervises and oversees summer school programming, from planning to execution.
  • Assists in budget management and academic programming oversight for departments.
  • Directly supervises Counselors to ensure proper course sequencing, college admissions preparation, and academic support.
  • Directly supervises the Registrar, ensuring accurate student records, report cards, and transcript maintenance.
  • Assists the Dean of Students in campus supervision and disciplinary matters.

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Supervises the development, implementation, and evaluation of all academic curricula, ensuring a rigorous and faith-based college preparatory program.
  • Ensures curriculum alignment with national and state college/university requirements, including the UC/Cal State A-G standards.
  • Oversees federal and state academic programs such as E-Rate, NCLB requirements, and Title I, II, IV.
  • Coordinates academic partnerships, including credit recovery programs and Cavalier Early College Pathway: El Camino COllege and Arizona State University, etc.
  • Assists in developing and creating the master schedule of courses, faculty assignments, and student course selection.
  • Ensures the accuracy and distribution of course catalogs, curriculum maps, and textbook lists.
  • Oversees school-wide assessments, including semester finals and standardized testing (STAR), ensuring proper test administration and record-keeping.
  • Collects and analyzes student performance data to inform academic programming and intervention strategies.
  • Maintains and distributes student academic eligibility lists, honor roll records, and academic intervention notifications.

Faculty Development & Supervision

  • Assists the Principal in the hiring and evaluation of faculty, ensuring strong Catholic values and professional competence.
  • Provides ongoing professional development, ensuring faculty utilize effective instructional strategies.
  • Conducts formal and informal classroom observations to ensure instructional effectiveness.
  • Promotes faculty growth, collaboration, and morale, fostering a supportive professional environment.
  • Assists in teacher contract renewals and performance management.
  • Encourages and supports innovative instructional programs to enhance student learning.

Co-Curricular & Student Programming

  • Supports faculty, staff, and student organizations in co-curricular programming.
  • Assists in the planning and execution of school-wide events, activities, and student leadership programs.
  • Represents the administration at athletic, academic, and student life events.

Faith & Professional Expectations

  • Supports and models the Catholic mission and values of the school.
  • Participates in faculty committees, school events, and student activities. Maintains professional growth through ongoing leadership development. Fosters a culture of academic excellence, integrity, and student-centered learning.

Perform any other duties assigned by the principal.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Education, Administration, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field.
  • Experience in academic leadership, curriculum development, or student affairs.
  • Knowledge of WASC accreditation, UC/Cal State A-G requirements, and college preparatory curriculum standards.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and administrative skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field.
  • Administrative credential or 2 year experience in Catholic school leadership.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Salary Range:

  • “$47, 402 – $81,613; Compensation commensurate with level of experience, relevant professional certifications, and/or degrees earned.” ○ Salary Range set forth by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles
