Description

The Assistant Principal: Dean of Faculty is a key leader in the Upper School at Saint Monica Preparatory. This role is responsible for promoting faculty well-being, fostering professional growth, and ensuring instructional excellence across all academic departments. Working closely with the Principal and administrative team, the Dean of Faculty oversees teacher recruitment, evaluation, and supervision, while ensuring instructional alignment with the school’s Catholic mission and college-preparatory standards. The role includes a teaching assignment and active engagement in strategic planning, curriculum oversight, and day-to-day academic leadership.

Position Responsibilities

Faculty Leadership

  • Supervise and support teacher performance in collaboration with Academy Deans.
  • Conduct regular classroom observations and provide feedback to promote instructional growth.
  • Lead the faculty evaluation process, including formal reviews and mentoring for professional development.
  • Oversee faculty hiring, onboarding, and retention in coordination with the Principal, HR, and academic leadership.
  • Serve on the committee that reviews and approves professional development, managing the PD budget.
  • Mentor faculty pursuing credentials, religious certification, or advanced degrees
  • Oversee the assignment and management of teaching and non-teaching duties to support curricular and co-curricular programs.
  • Support Academy Deans with teaching loads, section assignments, and scheduling responsibilities.

Administrative Leadership & Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key Upper School administrative team member, contributing to strategic planning, leadership meetings, and day-to-day school operations.
  • Collaborate on STAR testing: input data, analyze outcomes, share findings.
  • Work with testing/data teams to analyze and report standardized test performance (HSPT, PSAT, SAT/ACT, AP, STAR).
  • Lead and facilitate Academy Dean meetings; support curriculum planning and faculty development in collaboration with academic leadership.
  • Oversee and support faculty in-service planning, instructional initiatives, and leadership development efforts.
  • Actively participate in WCEA accreditation work, including implementing the Educational Improvement Plan, and self-study processes.
  • Collaborate with the administrative team on school safety and emergency response, including admin-on-duty rotations and crisis management protocols.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with faculty and staff, including weekly internal updates.
  • Support faculty coverage needs through oversight of substitute teacher assignments and coordination.
  • Remain engaged in professional development to stay current with educational trends, best practices, and leadership strategies.

Requirements

Qualifications, Experience, and Abilities:

  • The position requires strong interpersonal and leadership skills, resulting in effective relationships with a diverse range of people.
  • Excellent organizational skills are necessary for success in this position.
  • Strong academic experience and credentials are also required.
  • Strong computer skills are a plus, including experience with learning management systems (LMS, such as Google Classroom) and course scheduling and student record school information systems (SIS, such as PowerSchool).
  • A minimum of five years of teaching experience at the level of secondary education is required, and the candidate must have attained at least the academic equivalent of a Master’s Degree.
  • An administrative license is desirable but not required, and administrative leadership experience in secondary education is preferable.
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Educational Administration (or related field) or California Administrative Services Credential;
  • Commitment to modeling the values of Catholic educational leadership;
  • Experience in instructional leadership, including teacher supervision, knowledge of instructional best practices, analysis of standardized testing data, and practical application of instructional technology;
  • Collaborative leadership style with strong interpersonal and team-building skills;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Three years of successful administrative experience as an academic leader in a Catholic school is strongly preferred.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles offers comprehensive health benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage. All employees are enrolled in pension benefits from the time of employment and are considered vested after five years of full-time employment.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
