The Jesse Tree: Preparing Our Hearts for Christ This Advent

This Advent, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles invites the faithful to journey with us through the ancient tradition of the Jesse Tree—a beautiful way of tracing God’s saving work throughout salvation history. Rooted in the prophecy of Isaiah—“A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse” (Isa 11:1)—the Jesse Tree helps us reflect on the family tree of Jesus. Each symbol, story, and figure reminds us that God’s plan of love unfolded through people, challenges, and their hope.

From Adam and Eve to the prophets, from Ruth to David, each day’s symbol opens a window into the unfolding promise that leads to the birth of Christ. As we prepare our hearts during this season of anticipation, the Jesse Tree invites us to see how God has always been at work—and continues to work—in our own lives.

Throughout Advent, follow @lacatholics across our social media platforms for daily reflections, Scripture passages, and Jesse Tree symbols designed to help you enter more deeply into the mystery of Emmanuel, God-with-us.
