After nearly seven years serving as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, a new chapter in Bishop Robert E. Barron’s ministry as one of the Catholic Church’s most recognizable evangelists began halfway across the country. On Friday, July 29, the 62-year-old Chicago native was formally installed as the ninth bishop of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota.

Bishop Barron ‘thrilled’ to lead Minnesota diocese

Pope Francis has named Bishop Robert E. Barron the next bishop of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota, transferring him from the Santa Barbara pastoral region of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, where he has served as an auxiliary bishop for nearly seven years.

The Most Reverend Robert E. Barron is the Episcopal Vicar of the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region, one of the five Pastoral Regions in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He was appointed Titular Bishop of Macriana of Mauritania and Auxiliary Bishop in 2015.

Bishop Barron received a M.A. in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America in 1982 and a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris in 1992.

Shortly after his ordination, he served as associate pastor at St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Park Ridge, IL. Later on he was appointed to the theological faculty of Mundelein Seminary, and has served as a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame and at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, as well as scholar in residence at the North American Pontifical College at the Vatican. Archbishop Gomez appointed him Episcopal Vicar for the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region in 2015.
