Special Collection for Victims of Devastating Floods & Catastrophic Landslides in Nepal

Archdiocese of Los Angeles Announces Special Collection for Victims of Devastating Floods and Catastrophic Landslides in Nepal

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has asked parishes and Catholic schools across the Archdiocese, which encompasses Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties, to take up a special emergency collection on the weekends of October 4 and October 11 to assist those affected by the devastating floods and catastrophic landslides that struck the Nepal-Tibet border region on August 26.

On August 26, 2026, a glacial outburst flood and catastrophic landslide struck the Nepal-Tibet border region, unleashing flash floods and debris flows that devastated communities across northern Nepal. Entire villages were swept away, while homes, schools, hospitals, and essential infrastructure were destroyed. Nearly 1.6 million people have been affected. More than 1,400 people have been confirmed dead, more than 5,600 remain missing, and thousands more have been injured.

Rescue and recovery efforts continue more than a month later. Countless displaced families now face a long and difficult road to rebuild their homes, livelihoods, and communities.

Bishop A. Elias Zaidan, Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on International Justice and Peace, has called for a robust international humanitarian response and offered the prayers and solidarity of the Catholic Church in the United States to the people of Nepal. On behalf of Archbishop José H. Gomez, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles joins in that call and asks our parish family to respond with both prayer and generosity.

The collections will be sent to Catholic Relief Services, the international relief agency of the Church in the United States. Those wishing to donate directly can send donations directly to Catholic Relief Services at https://www.crs.org/donate/nepal-flood, 877-435-7277, or by mail at Catholic Relief Services, Nepal Flood Relief, P.O. Box 5278, Tipton, IA 52772-05177.

In solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters in Nepal the Pontifical Missions Societies takes a deep connection and collaboration with the efforts of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to give and provide through prayers and financial support to those suffering and in great need in Venezuela. Any questions or concerns, please contact the mission office at 213-637-7223 or missionsoffice@la-archdiocese.org
