Relics of 36 Cristero Mexican Martyrs Visit LA for Special One-Day Congress
The relics of 36 Mexican Martyrs from the Cristero War (1926-2026) will visit the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the “Celebrating 100 Years of Faith and Action” Congress. The free one-day celebration will take place at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This special event is a culmination of a year-long initiative which hosted Regional Congresses throughout the Archdiocese celebrating the Centennial of the Mexican Martyrs by raising awareness among our faithful about the important historic events that contributed to the faith of many of our immigrant families in and around Los Angeles.
All are invited to take part in the Congress to reflect on the persecution of Catholics during the Cristero War in Mexico and the impact of these events on our Church today. Participants will be able to venerate the relics of the 36 Mexican Martyrs including St. Toribio Romo and St. José Sánchez del Río.
The special visit of the relics also celebrates the support and refuge that the Archdioceses of Los Angeles gave to the thousands of faithful who fled the persecution of Catholics in Mexico during the Cristero War. The Archbishop of Mexico City in 1941 gifted a relic of the Tilma of St. Juan Diego, where the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared, to the Archbishop of Los Angeles as a symbol of fraternity and gratitude. The relic is enshrined for veneration in the Cathedral and will be a part of the reflections during the Congress.
The congress will feature speakers in both English and Spanish including renowned experts Dr. Jean Meyer, Dr. Julia Young, Mtro. Francisco Sanchez and Fr. Rafael Becerra. Holy Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop José H. Gomez.
This is a free event sponsored by Haciendo Caminos and St. John Seminary. Lunch will be available for purchase at the Galero Grill on the Cathedral Plaza. LAS RELIQUIAS DE 36 MÁRTIRES MEXICANOS VISITARÁN LOS ÁNGELES POR UN CONGRESO ESPECIAL
Las reliquias de los 36 mártires mexicanos de la Guerra Cristera (1926-2026) visitarán la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles para el Congreso “Celebrando 100 años de fe y acción”. La celebración gratuita de un día tendrá lugar en la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles el sábado, 18 de abril del 2026 de las 8:30 a.m. a 5 p.m. Este evento especial es la culminación de una iniciativa por lo largo de un año que realizo congresos regionales en toda la Arquidiócesis celebrando el Centenario de los Mártires Mexicanos y dar a conocer entre nuestros fieles los importantes eventos históricos que contribuyeron a la fe de muchas de nuestras familias inmigrantes en Los Ángeles y sus alrededores.
Todos están invitados a participar en el Congreso para reflexionar sobre la persecución de los católicos durante la Guerra Cristera en México y el impacto de estos acontecimientos en nuestra iglesia hoy en día. Participantes podrán venerar las reliquias de los 36 Mártires Mexicanos incluyen a San Toribio Romo y a San José Sánchez del Río.
La visita especial de las reliquias también conmemora el apoyo y el refugio que la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles brindó a los miles de fieles que huyeron la persecución de los católicos en México durante la Guerra Cristera. En 1941, el Arzobispo de Ciudad de México regaló una reliquia de la tilma de San Juan Diego, en la que se apareció la imagen milagrosa de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, al Arzobispo de Los Ángeles como símbolo de fraternidad y gratitud. La reliquia se encuentra expuesta para la veneración en la Catedral y será parte de las reflexiones durante el Congreso.
El congreso contará con conferenciantes que darán charlas en inglés y español incluyendo el Dr. Jean Meyer, la Dra. Julia Young, el Mtro. Francisco Sánchez y el P. Rafael Becerra. La Santa Misa será celebrada por el Arzobispo José H. Gomez.
Este es un evento gratuito patrocinado por Haciendo Caminos y el Seminario de San Juan. Se podrá comprar el almuerzo en Galero Grill en la Plaza de la Catedral.
