Few celebrations on the first Farmworkers Day

More than 1,000 people marched through the streets of Delano on March 31 last year, retracing a route taken by the late civil rights icon Cesar Chavez on the holiday named for the union leader to honor his legacy.

This year, March 31 is renamed Farmworkers Day, and no such march will take place. Few, if any, celebrations seem to be taking place.

Lately, the state is grappling with the fallout from an explosive New York Times investigation published this month alleging Chavez sexually assaulted several women, including minors, during the 1960s and 70s.
