Archbishop Gomez to Conclude Archdiocese’s Jubilee Year at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Dec. 28

–Jubilee Year Fanned Flame of Hope Through Prayer, Pilgrimage, Reconciliation and Plenary Indulgence–

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles will joyfully conclude the “Pilgrims of Hope” Jubilee Year with the Rite of the Closing of the Jubilee at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Sunday, December 28, 2025, the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Archbishop José H. Gomez will preside at the 10 a.m. Mass, gathering the faithful in thanksgiving for a year marked by grace, mercy, and hope. Pope Francis declared 2025 as a Jubilee Year, a special Holy Year for spiritual renewal and reconciliation, focusing on hope in God amidst global challenges. The Jubilee Year, which happens every 25 years, began on Christmas Eve 2024 when Pope Francis opened the Holy Doors of St. Peter’s Basilica. On January 6, 2026, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, Pope Leo XIV will conclude the Jubilee Year in Rome with the closing of the Holy Doors.

The closing of the Jubilee will be the occasion to give thanks to God for all he has done during this special year of prayer and conversion. In his homily during the opening of the Jubilee on December 29, 2024, Archbishop Gomez reflected on the meaning of the Holy Year: “Our life’s journey is now a journey of faith. With Jesus at our side, walking by his Spirit, we are on pilgrimage to his Father’s house, to the heavenly kingdom, where we will discover the love that never ends. Our pilgrimage is never a solitary one; we all go together on this journey of life — as Jesus, Mary, and Joseph did — in our families, and together with our brothers and sisters in the family of God, the Church.”

During the Holy Year, a plenary indulgence in the usual form of the Church was granted to all the faithful who, truly repentant and detached from any sin, confessed their sins sacramentally, received Holy Communion, prayed for the intentions of the Holy Father, and went on a pilgrimage visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels or Mission Basilica San Buenaventura, or performed corporal or spiritual works of mercy.

Throughout the Jubilee Year, the Archdiocese offered numerous opportunities for prayer, reconciliation, and mission. One highlight was 24 Hours for the Lord, during which churches across the Archdiocese remained open day and night for Eucharistic adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Another was the Pilgrimage of Hope on Saturday, April 5, in which almost six thousand faithful took to the streets to walk six miles from All Souls Church in Alhambra to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, where the journey concluded with the celebration of Mass.

The Archdiocese also unveiled a special Jubilee logo for the local Church, complementing the official logo from the Holy See. The image of a doorway recalls the Holy Doors in Rome and “the door of faith” (Acts 14:27), through which the faithful enter into the Church’s pilgrimage toward heavenly glory. An upward path represents the journey of hope, walked together with eyes fixed on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2). At the center stands the cross, reminding us that in Christ “all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). From the cross radiates a Eucharistic host, symbolizing the grace poured out from the heart of Christ and received in the Most Holy Eucharist — nourishment for our mission as pilgrims and missionaries of hope.

A dedicated Jubilee website, Pilgrims of Hope, provided resources, event information, and reflections on the Jubilee theme for the year. Photos of the events are available on the website.
