This Christmas, Archbishop José H. Gomez celebrated Masses on Christmas Eve last night at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles and Christmas morning at the Century Regional Detention Facility for Women in Lynwood. He will also celebrate Christmas Mass today, December 25, at 12:30 p.m. at the Cathedral.
“Let us allow the beautiful gift of Christmas to renew our lives, to give us a new sense of our purpose and place in the world. Let us not be afraid to open the doors of our hearts wider and wider every day to welcome Jesus,” said Archbishop Gomez in his Christmas homily. “Let’s keep making more and more room for Him in the ‘inn’ of our hearts. Today a Savior has been born for each one of us. Let us allow His love and His friendship to make everything new in our lives!”
The Archbishop also dedicated his column in Angelus News to a special Christmas message for the faithful of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles writing: “Love is the great ‘why’ of reality. Love is the answer to the mystery of who God is, and why the world exists, and why each of us is created.” The full column is available at https://angelusnews.com/voices/christmas-love/.
“In becoming a Child in the womb of Mary, in humbling himself to be born of a woman, God reveals that in our human nature we are created with the capacity for God,” wrote Archbishop Gomez in the column. “Our humanity is destined to share in his divinity. In his divine plan, we are made to be like him, to partake in his divine nature, to be taken up in the great mystery of his love.”
Archbishop Gomez also made a special visit this morning to the Century Regional Detention Facility for Women in Lynwood where he celebrated Christmas Mass for the inmates and staff.
“Sisters, every one of you is precious to Jesus. Please, never forget that! These are not just pretty words, this is the truth. He created you because He loves you and He wanted you to be born,” said Archbishop Gomez during the homily of the Mass at the detention facility. “This is what Jesus came to reveal on Christmas.”
Cathedral Masses were livestreamed on facebook.com/olacathedral and youtube.com/olacathedral, and broadcasted live by ABC7 on digital channel 7.2 (check local listing for provider), and Spectrum 1246.
