Each year, Mayfield Junior School begins the academic year in prayer and celebration with a special Opening Mass for students, families, faculty, staff and alumni. This year’s celebration was especially meaningful as the school community had the honor of welcoming the Most Rev. José H. Gomez, archbishop of Los Angeles, as the celebrant.
During his homily, Archbishop Gomez shared a powerful message centered on two newly canonized saints in the Roman Catholic Church: Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati and Saint Carlo Acutis. He described Saint Frassati as “an ordinary young man who loved mountain climbing, cycling, and swimming” — a reminder that holiness often begins in the everyday moments of life.
He went on to highlight Saint Carlo Acutis, who died at age 15 and is recognized as the church’s first “digital age” saint. A teenager who enjoyed soccer, video games and working with computers, Saint Carlo utilized digital media to foster devotion and spread the Catholic faith worldwide.
