LA’s Bishop Szkredka appointed apostolic administrator of Diocese of Monterey

Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Slawomir Szkredka will serve as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Monterey on a temporary basis following Bishop Daniel Garcia’s departure to lead the Diocese of Austin, Texas.

The appointment was made by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the U.S., the same week that Bishop Garcia was officially installed as the new bishop of Austin, Texas on Sept. 18. Garcia had led the Diocese of Monterey since 2019. Garcia was appointed to the new role by Pope Leo XIV earlier this summer.

Szkredka, 51, is expected to serve in the new role until the Vatican selects a new bishop to succeed Garcia in Monterey. The Polish-born bishop will split his time between the LA Archdiocese’s Santa Barbara Pastoral Region, where he will continue to serve as episcopal vicar, and his new duties in Monterey.
