Empathy is not weakness, San Gabriel Valley interfaith leaders say, holding vigil to support people impacted by raids

More than 100 people brought flowers, candles, prayers and their outrage to the second interfaith vigil organized by the community group LA Voice Wednesday, July 23, at Avocado Heights Park in La Puente.

The Rev. Brian Nunes, auxiliary bishop for the San Gabriel Region of the Archdiocese of Los Angels, assured the crowd of the prayers and support of Archbishop José H. Gomez, who that morning launched the Family Assistance Program that will help parishes provide services such as groceries, meal and prescription deliveries to those affected by recent immigration enforcement.

Nunes said the nation’s largest Catholic archdiocese has trained more than 180 women religious, priests and deacons to accompany immigrants to court hearings, giving physical and spiritual support. He also called for “comprehensive immigration reform grounded in human dignity and Catholic social teaching.”
