Wednesday of the Third Week of Advent

Beyond Belief

“Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” ask the disciples of John the Baptist on his behalf. Stop and let that sink in: Even John the Baptist was not entirely sure if Jesus was The One. Is it any wonder that we sometimes feel lost? Believing is scary business. Back in Jesus’ time it could get you imprisoned or worse. And while we may not have to wrestle with those kinds of threats, the basic fact of our humanity makes it difficult to go all in. We hold back a bit, as if to hedge our bets, but all that does is cut us off from what — and Who — we need most. What are you holding back from God?
