Through this vital ministry and visitation program, Catholic Chaplains provide personal and spiritual support to incarcerated men, women, and juveniles, including offering Mass and Communion services and religious education, visiting one on one, and teaching coping skills.
With 10 Chaplains and 280 volunteers, we minister in nine County jails on a regular basis. Last year, we held some 2,500 Mass/Communion Services with more than 63,000 inmate participants. We also conducted more than 40,860 one-on-one sessions.
Six Chaplains and 240 volunteers serve some 1,000 juveniles in six juvenile halls. Another Chaplain and 95 volunteers minister to 325 youths in six camps. In 2017, these Chaplains and volunteers led more than 872 full service sessions for over 12,000 participants, conducted roughly 4,000 sacrament preparations/faith sharing sessions for more than 13,000 participants, and held more than 9,000 one-on-one sessions.
