Statement from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles

The decision to honor a group that clearly mocks the Catholic faith and makes light of the sincere and holy vocations of our women religious who are an integral part of our Church is what has caused disappointment, concern, anger, and dismay from our Catholic community. The ministries and vocations of our religious women should be honored and celebrated through genuine acts of appreciation, reverence, and respect for their sacred vows, and for all the good works of our nuns and sisters in service of the mission of the Catholic Church. From providing a quality education for inner city students, to serving the sick, the homeless, the hungry and so many others in need, to caring for the souls of our faithful through prayer, our women religious have dedicated their lives to the Catholic faith and mission, sharing God’s loving grace with others. The Archdiocese stands against any actions that would disparage and diminish our Christian faith and those who dedicate their lives to Christ.

The Archdiocese calls on all Catholics and people of goodwill to stand against bigotry and hate in any form and to stand for respect for one another and for the religious beliefs of our communities of faith.  Let us also show our care and respect for our women religious by sending a message of support to their communities through phone calls, letters, and posts on their social channels, supporting vocations by donating to their orders, and/or making donations in their name to the programs they support. Let us show the world how much our women religious mean to us and our Church.

La decisión de honrar a un grupo que claramente se burla de la fe católica y menosprecia las vocaciones sinceras y santas de nuestras hermanas religiosas que son parte integral de nuestra Iglesia es lo que ha causado decepción, preocupación, enojo y consternación en nuestra comunidad católica. Los ministerios y vocaciones de nuestras hermanas religiosas deben ser honradas y celebradas a través de actos genuinos de aprecio, reverencia y respeto por sus votos sagrados y por todas las buenas obras de nuestras monjas y hermanas que están al servicio de la misión de la Iglesia católica. Sus cuidados se extienden desde la provisión de una educación de calidad a estudiantes en vecindarios de bajos recursos, servir a los enfermos, a las personas sin hogar o sin comida y a tantos otros necesitados, hasta cuidar las almas de nuestros fieles por medio de la oración. Nuestras hermanas religiosas han dedicado sus vidas a la fe católica y a la misión de nuestra Iglesia, compartiendo la gracia amorosa de Dios con los demás. La Arquidiócesis se opone a cualquier acción que desacredite y subestime nuestra fe cristiana y a aquellos que dedican sus vidas a Cristo.

La Arquidiócesis hace un llamado a los católicos y personas de buena voluntad para que se opongan a la intolerancia y al odio en cualquier forma y defiendan el respeto mutuo y las creencias religiosas de nuestras comunidades de fe. Demostremos también nuestro cuidado y respeto por nuestras hermanas religiosas enviando mensajes de apoyo a sus comunidades a través de llamadas telefónicas, cartas y publicaciones en sus redes sociales, apoyando las vocaciones donando a sus órdenes religiosas y/o haciendo donaciones en su nombre a los programas que ellas apoyan. Demostremos al mundo cuánto significan nuestras hermanas religiosas para nosotros y para nuestra Iglesia.
