Social Science Instructor – Full-time faculty position for the 2024-2025 school year

Description – Loyola High School is a premier Catholic, Jesuit high school in Los Angeles that is ranked the #5 Catholic high school in California. We are accepting applications from qualified mission-aligned persons seeking a history/social science teaching position in a thriving Jesuit school community. Candidates should be able to demonstrate expertise of historical and historiographical content through a diverse range of pedagogical techniques. Candidates should be able to teach and stress historical writing, critical thinking, analysis, and public speaking. Candidates should have a collaborative mindset and demonstrate experience working in groups to create curriculum, evaluate formative/summative assessments, and build common resources. Ideal applicants should be open to professional growth and committed to participation in a Jesuit secondary education setting and must demonstrate evidence of effective communication, collaboration, and aptitude with educational technology.

Subject taught: Advanced Placement level History and Social Science classes.

Primary duties: The teacher is expected to teach five periods of History/Social Science classes in a college-preparatory environment. Teaching includes lesson planning, lesson presentation, student assessment, and individualized student support as needed. One additional period is allocated to the Teachers schedule as part of a professional learning community. The teacher is expected to develop, plan and present lessons to students in a classroom, utilizing course material and other appropriate learning material. The teacher is expected to supervise, monitor, assign and evaluate students. In addition, candidates will establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom, maintain appropriate and timely records of student progress, communicate with parents, and establish and maintain an effective environment for students, in order to foster learning.

Additional duties: Teachers are expected to support the school’s spiritual program by assisting with retreats, school-wide liturgies, and/or community service programs. The teacher is expected to support the school’s co-curricular programs by moderating activities and/or clubs as well as prefect at various dances and athletic events. The teacher is expected to assist in exam proctoring, classroom substitutions, and lunchtime prefecting.

Requirements

Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree in History and experience teaching in a high school setting. The candidate must also have knowledge of the Advanced Placement programs in History.

Desired education: Graduate degree in History and/or a teaching credential.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
