Description

Bishop Montgomery High School located in Torrance, California, is considering applications for a High School Music Director and a Visual & Performing Arts department teacher for the 2024-2025 academic school year. Candidates should be qualified to direct the music program, teach Music Production and other VPA course as needed.

Primary Functions: To provide, a comprehensive music program as the Music Director of BMHS and as a member of the Visual & Performing Arts Department, a comprehensive curriculum program for students in grades 9-12 as determined by the curriculum. The candidate should specifically provide instruction to meet the needs of assigned academic classes as needed; consult with the administration, and fellow Visual & Performing Arts Department chair & teachers, to enhance the student’s curricular & spiritual growth.

Major Job Responsibilities: Implement the high school curriculum through delivery of classroom instruction; participate in the intervention process for students in need; plan appropriate lessons, pursue continuous professional growth, and attend all required meetings/in-service days.

TBK Music Director – Marching Band, Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra, Indoor Drumline:

  • Work with students to build community, foster student achievement, and create high-quality performances
  • Select music; through purchasing, arranging, and composition
  • Organize and plan rehearsals – logistics, music, student learning outcomes
  • Prepare for performances, both director-chosen (i.e. concerts, competitions) and school-chosen (i.e. rallies, athletic events)
  • Organize logistics for all events
  • Oversee & supervise coaches with umbrella ensembles: string orchestra, drumline, colorguard
  • Plan visits to local schools, competition field trips, and spring tours
  • Coordinate with Activities Director and Song Team Coach for school-wide performances at athletic events (especially football games), pep rallies, Shadow Days, and more
  • Coordinate with TBK Music Booster parent organization for logistics support and fundraising needs
  • Maintain equipment, uniforms, furniture, storage spaces, and transport trailer and carts
  • Communicate with TBK students and families to ensure participation and understanding

Music Production Class:

  • Teach students to enjoy music through solo performance on various instruments, especially guitar, bass, piano, and drums
  • Work with students in groups to foster understanding of collaboration through music
  • Teach students to compose songs for various instruments and ensembles, using traditional sheet-music notation (Musescore, Noteflight) and DAW composition software (Bandlab, Soundation, Reaper, Protools)
  • Teach students to set up and manage both live-sound (PA) events and recorded-sound (studio) sessions

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Teaching credential preferred
  • At least three (3) years experience
  • Good interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships with students, parents, and school personnel
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and complete by due dates
  • Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form
  • Must demonstrate sensitivity towards students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with teenagers and their parents
  • Ability to maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs (aeries, canvas, google classroom)

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
