Archbishop Gomez to Celebrate Holy Saturday with a Blessing of Animals at Olvera Street

Archbishop José H. Gomez will lead the blessing of animals, at Placita Olvera, 424 N Main St., today, March 30, from 2-3 p.m. The Blessing of the Animals has been a part of Olvera Street since its founding in 1930 when priests would bless cows, horses, and goats at La Placita Church to help ensure health, fecundity, and productivity.

Since its inception in 1930, the blessing of animals’ practice at Placita Olvera has been dedicated to San Antonio De Abad, the patron saint of the animal kingdom since the 4th century, by the Olvera Street Merchants Association Foundation, organizers of the annual event.

NOTE: The line for the blessing of animals begins at 1:00 p.m. in front of the Pico House on Main Street – please follow signs and instructions from event staff.

Street closure: Main Street, between Arcadia and Cesar Chavez will be closed from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.
