I am the LORD, your God, who grasp your right hand; It is I who say to you, “Fear not, I will help you.” -Isaiah 41:13
“Whoever has ears ought to hear,” Jesus says in today’s Gospel. What does this mean for us as we continue to seek out the silence and listen intently for the voice of God? It comes back to hearing vs. listening. Are we sitting in silence and all the while making a grocery list or planning our weekend, or are we sitting in silence and truly listening, as St. Benedict instructed in his famous rule, “with the ear of our heart”? It is not enough to sit in silence and listen to the distant ping of email coming in or the dishwasher cycling off. We are called to listen from deep within our hearts and souls. When we listen with the ear of our heart, we let the expectations of the world drop away bit by bit to reveal the truth hidden within.
